Combined with a microcontroller, this shield allows to control a Shapeoko numerical control, and to ensure the power supply of the stepper motors.
This shield, or "CNC Shield V3" expansion board is plugged in a UNO R3 card, whether it’s an official Arduino or an Arduino clone. It allows to connect 4 DRV8825 or A4988 driver cards.
Advice : For CNCs, you need to install 4 DRV8825 Mini Shields, because they tolerate a larger voltage range and a higher intensity (above 1.5A if they are cooled). So, it’s allows to better spread the peaks of voltage and intensity.
With the DRV8825 expansion boards, the V3 CNC Shield can easily control a Shapeoko 2 numerical control.
The V3 CNC Shield is perfect for low budget CNCs. The fact that the steppers drivers aren’t directly integrated into the shield (they are shields themselves) creates an additional congestion compared to a product like Synthetos "gShield" which is more integrated. However, for a small CNC, equipped with small stepper motors (NEMA14 or NEMA17), the performances are very good and the V3 CNC Shield price becomes an excellent and great asset.
Of course, It allows to install up to two thrust switches for each of the 3 axes (Max limit, Min limit) and avoid crashes, including a rotary tool crash. You can also connect an emergency stop button, as well as outside buttons pause, resume and stop. However, for a small CNC, equipped with small stepper motors (NEMA14 or NEMA17), the performances are very great and the V3 CNC Shield price becomes an excellent asset.
Like the G-Shield, the V3 CNC Shield is perfectly compatible with GRBL, the main software used for desktop CNCs, because it’s based on Arduino.
V3 CNC Shield power supply: 12 to 36V DC
